The General Idea of Solarbabies

In a future in which most water has disappeared from the Earth, an orphanage, run by the despotic rulers of the new Earth is more like a prison. A group of kids have formed a “skateball” team and call themselves Solarbabies. The youngest member of the team (their mascot) finds an orb of special power, but is stolen by a mysterious outsider who escapes the orphanage.

The Solarbabies escape from the orphanage and try to cross the wasteland looking for the orb as the stormtroopers search for them and the orb. They discover what is left of this post apocalyptic world, and an adventure that will change everything they know.

THE GOOD

There is a solid story that was very reminiscent of teenage independence in the 80s. There seemed to be a lot of movies where kids are left to fend for themselves. This film takes a strong sense of loneliness that is only staved off by friendship and “the family you choose” mentality. Looking back on it, I found the “gang” to be more realistic than some of their contemporaries of the time that just seemed to be a cluster of exaggerated personalities. However, at the time I was more fascinated by the roller skates, and how cute a teenage Jami Gertz was.

The minimal effects are quite decent considering this film was made in 1986. They are not so cheesey that they take you out of the film, even by todays standards. The story is the real star here and it weaves a wonderful story of friendship and adventure at its heart. No gritty darkness or ultra real violence that seems to be the only trigger for entertainment these days, but still it manages to tell the tale of this strange fictional future.

Sarah Douglas plays the suit behind the enforcer cop and she is more menacing than the leader of the cops. Its no wonder she exudes an evil spirit as she was earlier seen as Ursa in Superman 2. Her part is brief but effective. She could recite nursery rhymes and still make it clear that their militaristic goals are evil.

Also in a supporting role of the strange outsider who first steals the orb from the Solarbabies, Heroes’ Adrian Pasadar (pictured above as in the movie) makes one of his earliest appearances in film.

Also, the orb has a name. It’s Bodhi. Before Patrick Swayze ever used it in Point Break.

THE BAD

The despotic leader of the Protectorate hardly makes for a menacing opposition. He reminds me of the bumbling LtHarris from Police Academy. Without the bumbling. He just doesn’t have the presence to lead a police force that is supposed to embody evil. If not for his sidekick enforcer, I wouldn’t find them a threat at all even though they are the ones with the guns.

And for the love of Zod, the Rollerskates. Ok, we can accept that there was quad skates instead of the inline rollerblades far more popular today, but they were a gimmick in this film and nothing more. The late 80s were clinging onto their quad roller skates that managed to maintain decades of popularity over many other fads of the time and they wanted them to be cool in this movie too. The Solarbabies played a game like lacrosse on skates. It’s what binds these orphans together – the only entertainment or joy they had in their dismal lives. When they break out of the complex they took to their skates to escape across the wasteland which conveniently had plenty of roads for them to run off on. The inclusion of rollerskates was completely uneccessary.

Also the group of friends is, by todays standards, a tired stereotype. Despite having less exaggerated personalities than most other films of the time, The Solarbabies are a Breakfast club gang with their handicapped sidekick, alpha male leader, hot brunette, nerdy computer guy, token black kid who breakdances and the musclebound jock. Watching this with years of those stereotypes used over and over takes away from their “uniqueness” in its time. So in that aspect it doesn’t hold up well.

Colic generally arose in the first month after birth, and disappear by itself when the baby was 3 or 4 month.  Is colic serious?

No, if it does not happen on an ongoing . But we must try to stop colic in infants, with the remain calm. Here are 10 tips to overcome colic in your baby:

1. Check to see if your baby is hungry

First of all you should check to see if your baby is hungry. To do this with young babies simply place you finger under their chin and if it tries to suck or move toward it then it means that your baby is hungry.

2. Walk with your baby

Walk with your baby or sit in a rocking chair. The continuous movement will soothe your baby. However, be sure to place your baby’s head close to your chest so that it can hear your heartbeat.

3. Burping while feeding

Try burping your baby more frequently during feeding.

4. Know that a colic attack is coming and be prepared for it

When dealing with a colicky baby it is best to plan ahead. For example, if your baby usually has colic attacks in the afternoon/evening then you should do most of your household chores in the morning. Make sure that if your baby has been awake for most of the morning that he/she gets a nap in the afternoon and you take one with them. A nap can actually reduce the frequency of the colic attacks and how long they last.

5. Play music/ hearing Al-Qur’an for moslem

Play music like classical or slow music as some babies respond better to sound and will find it soothing.

6. Stop the Crying as soon as possible

Using a pacifier may help stop your baby crying however, if this does not work a small bottle of sugar water helps calm and relax the baby.

Stopping your baby’s crying spells as quickly and calmly as possible can significantly shorten the episodes of colic.

7. Massage

Place your baby across your lap while he/she lies on his/her belly and rub his/her back. This will help get rid of air in your baby’s stomach and prevent gas.

8. Neck nestling – Dad’s are fantastic at this!

This is when the baby snuggles his/her head into the space that is located between the jaw and chest of the parent. Your jawbone drapes gently over the baby’s head and your voice box presses against its’ head. Small babies hear not only with their ears but also the vibrations that go through their skull. If you sing something monotonous like a lullaby it will help your baby to drift off to sleep. This technique works best with dad’s because they have a lower pitch and higher vibration from their voice.

9. A special favourite – especially good for dad’s as well!

This is a good technique for dad’s to do. What you have to do is drape your bare skinned but diapered baby over your bare chest. Make sure that your baby’s ear is over your heartbeat. The rhythm of your heart combined with the rhythm of your chest moving as you are breathing and a bit of rhythmic patting on your baby’s back will usually soothe both of you.

10. Use motion

Some babies prefer to be still when calmed down whereas, others like the use of motion to be soothed. Motion swings set at approximately 60 beats per minute is an excellent device to be used for those types of babies. The constant motion is great for relaxing the baby. Do not fear or worry too much if your child has colic as your baby will outgrow it. However, do consult your doctor if your baby screams constantly or if your baby’s colic attacks are accompanied with excessive vomiting, diarrhea and constipation. These symptoms may indicate a more serious problem.

That’s because your body will automatically produce milk that’s specially designed to nourish your premature baby, with extra calories, vitamins, and protein. What’s more, the live cells in breast milk that protect babies from infection can be even more important for premature babies: Preemies face a higher risk of infection because their immune systems are particularly immature. You will find artificial formulas and supplements made just for preemies, but they can’t provide the antibodies and other protective factors that are in your breast milk and are so beneficial to a fragile premature infant.

Whether or not your baby is ready to nurse at your breast right away will depend on his gestational age and overall health. At many hospitals it’s standard practice to start off feeding very premature babies expressed breast milk through a nasogastric (NG) tube (known as gavage). This is to make sure the baby gets as much nourishment as possible if he’s too immature to suckle from breast or bottle.

You’ll work closely with the hospital staff overseeing your baby’s care on a plan to feed your pumped breast milk to your baby. Many preemies simply aren’t ready to start breastfeeding in the hospital right away, and won’t be released until they’ve started to gain weight from breast- and/or bottle-feeding.

Once your baby is able to start nursing at the breast, be prepared to nurse frequently, although preemies may not take in much milk at each feeding until they’re closer to term. For this reason, you’ll need to pump after feedings to keep up your milk production as well as have milk for any necessary supplementary feedings. You may need to use different  for your preemie. Hospital staff, including lactation professionals, may be helpful when you start breastfeeding.
